Welcome Baby With A Book Shower

Books are a large part of a child’s life, even as a newborn. For a book theme baby shower, each guest brings a favorite book. At the end of the party, the expectant mother will have a plethora of books — bedtime books, board books, classic stories, pop-up books, cushion books and more. On the inside cover of the book, the guest can write her favorite childhood memory reading this book or another heartfelt message to the mother and child.

Here are some of our choices for classic books and favorite authors that should be in every child’s personal library
books

The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein
The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle
Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown
Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do you see? by Bill Martin, Jr.
Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss
Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak
The Cat in the Hat by Dr. Seuss
Curious George by Hans Augusto Rey
Clifford, the Big Red Dog by Norman Bridwel
The Tale of Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter
The Little Engine That Could by Watty Piperb

A more recent addition to our list is author Mo Willems. With his Elephant & Piggie, Pigeon, and Knuffle Bunny stories, he is quickly becoming one of my favorites.

My favorite books for ages 1-4 were from BabyBug. My children loved to hear the well-written verses, and see the illustrations of babies doing various things. Simple board books of baby photos were another big hit.

In addition to books, guests can bring along a keepsake to go along with their chosen book. As for the decor, the room can be decorated in a fairy tale princess theme, or nursery rhyme theme to go along with some of the books. Or the theme can find a specific favorite, like Goodnight Moon. Add a party game where guests have to guess the nursery rhyme or book title by hearing a line from that book. In all, a book baby shower idea is a great way to start off the child’s library.

Avoiding the “Dreaded Baby Shower”

baby shower invitationsI tend to get excited about baby showers, themes and gifts, as I am a born baby lover. However, attending a baby shower is NOT always looked forward to with such enthusiasm by your entire guest list. The mom-to-be’s closest family and friends will of course want to be there to share in the joy. They will likely have fun just being together. But what about the rest of your guests. How can you make this baby shower fun for them? Here are a few ideas. Feel free to contribute more ideas!!

  • Consider having a “display shower.” We are seeing more invitations mentioning at the end of their information “display shower – please bring unwrapped gifts.” The gifts are arranged on a gift display table like at a wedding. We have also seen this termed a “no-wrap” gift shower, or a “green shower” since no wrapping paper was sacrificed to the dump due to the planning of this shower.Advantages: no one has to sit through 1.5 hours of tedious gift unwrapping! Anyone interested in looking through the gifts can peruse the table. If not, they are free to mix and mingle, or get involved in any other activities you have planned, more like a party.Disadvantages: guests may feel uncomfortable just dropping an unwrapped gift on the table. They will want to dress up their package a bit anyway. A bow and gift tag should do it.
  • Make it special for your guests, not just for the expectant mother. Beautiful favors, special foods, and a friendly atmosphere will make your guests glad they came. Have your conversation starters ready!
  • Consider hosting a non-traditional baby shower. A backyard barbecue couples shower, a picnic with kids invited, or an elegant afternoon tea may break your party out of the mold.
  • If the mom-to-be does not really want or need a big shower, perhaps plan a small event with close friends or immediate family. The small, personal gathering and the knowledge that you are excited about the new baby is best gift for the new parents. You can also chip in to get one big gift that will mean the world to them.
  • Make it easy on your guests. It is good to know that Miss Manners does not wish to see registry information on an invitation, or any mention of gifts, but there is also reality. Most people bring a gift to a shower. Helping guests easily find something that will be a hit is a kindness. But don’t give any gift specifics or requirements on the invitation. Your guest should have complete gift freedom. If they need specific ideas, they will call.

Throw A Green Baby Shower!

baby shower invitations
Want to go green with your baby shower? Make it a recycled baby shower by requesting that guests bring second-hand gifts, unwrapped. Wonderful toys, clothing and baby gear are available gently used at resale shops, yard sales, and from your own collection at home. And, they work just as well as the new ones.

The green Mommy-to-be will appreciate the reduced impact on our landfills, and you will appreciate the prices. It is truly a win-win!

Skipping the wrapping paper helps, too. To make the shower a “display shower”, guests simply add their unwrapped gifts to a gift table when they enter. Then they are free to enjoy the festive occasion without watching hours of unwrapping.

Baby Bunnies Nursery or Shower Theme

Baby Bunny InvitationBunnies aren’t limited to easter! A baby bunny theme for the nursery or shower can work for a baby boy or girl when combined with nautral tones and pale sage. We found some adorable bedding by Kids Line, called Bunny Meadow, that is a charming solution for a unisex nursery.

It can easily be paired with some some classics from children’s literature:

    • “Nutbrown Hare” style accents (from the book “Guess How Much I Love You”) such as this adorable plush bunny.

Baby shower decorations could include sage and tan, with orange or pink accents. Decorate your table with whole carrots still attached to their lovely green tops, bunny cookies, and a tan plaid or light green fabric found at the nearest fabric store.

Or, you could focus on the book “Pat the Bunny” by Dorothy Kunhardt, with colors and a cute diaper cake/centerpiece.

If you have a baby girl, you could go with pink bunnies for a theme or shower decorations. Take a look at the Springmaid pink Bunny crib set or the brown and pink “B is for Bunny” crib set. What little girl wouldn’t love these pink bunny baby shower gifts?

Beach Theme Baby Shower Ideas

beach baby shower invitation
Be ahead of the curve by throwing a baby shower that everyone will talk about. The tropical baby shower is in style, along with a growing trend towards a beach baby shower theme. You’re never limited to the conventional when you can be host to your guests in the great outdoors. Indoors or out, crank up the Beach Boys or calypso music and set the mood!

The color selections are endless and your own backyard setting can be transformed into the tropics with some garden torches and colorful patio lights along with your own garden flowers. If you go with the beach baby shower theme, small buckets of sand with sand toys and sea shells can decorate the tables that you can cover with large beach towels instead of the usual tablecloths. Use a child’s wading pool to float colorful flowers or beach toys. If the weather doesn’t permit, you can bring in a touch of paradise with just a few inexpensive supplies. Use beach chairs as space permits draped with beach towels or pass out sunglasses and leis. Skirt your tables with hula skirt material or decorate a bassinet hawaiian-style to receive gifts.

Beach Baby Shower Invitation
Choose tropical baby shower invitations showing a tropical scene to help set the tone before the big day. The food you serve can also continue the tropical baby shower theme. Set out a platter of mango, passion fruit and strawberries along with a cool refreshing beverage spiced up with a cocktail umbrella. If your tropical shower is close to mealtime how about a barbecue? Hamburgers, hotdogs and ice cream treats to remind you of your own childhood days at the shore.

The beach ball toss is a nice ice-breaker. Hand the ball to one person and have them state their name, something interesting about themselves or how they know the mommy-to-be and then pass it along to the person next to them. Of just let a beach ball volley around during the gift opening. If your guests are really relaxed, some may choose to particpate in a hula lesson or contest you have planned ahead.

Need a tropical baby shower favor that you can make yourself? Send your guests away with a mini-bottle filled with sand and a little thank you tag attached from mommy and baby. We also show several tropical theme shower favors in our blog article about tropical bridal showers.

Don’t let tradition hold you back. Some of the most memorable and enjoyable baby showers are those that don’t fit the mold.

Pink and Orange – Still Hot!

Pink and orange look great together. But the dominant color really decides the look. More pink than orange and you have a hip little girl’s room, or a sweet wedding color scheme. More orange than pink, and you have a tropical bedroom or a happening prom dress.

Wedding Invitations

You can vary the shades from baby pink to fushia, from melon to burnt orange to tweak your theme. A baby shower in blush and clementine would be sweet and modern. A bridal shower in deep pink and tangerine would be exciting and feminine. The pink and orange bridal shower invitation would feel very different from the pink and orange baby shower invitation, just because of the difference in intensity.

Gerbera Daisy Invitation

The pink and orange wedding has moved from a tropical destination wedding trend to a popular nation-wide trend.

Is orange going to be the new pink? It doesn’t have to be. Pink and orange wedding invitations usually give the bride a place to use more pink or orange, i.e. in the ink, ribbon or paper choice. There are many options in the celebration to tone down or jazz up the pink and orange vibe until the combination excites your bridesmaids, without scaring your grandmother.
